The design draws inspiration from Walter and Ise Gropius’s active relationship with the landscape, from tending gardens to horseback riding on the property with Gropius’s horse, Colvin. It also responds to the endangered Little Brown Bat (Myotis lucifugus), a species native to the adjacent Walden Pond landscape and surrounding forest corridors. Widely used DIY bat habitats demonstrate how simple architectural interventions can support bat conservation. Bathaus expands this idea by integrating permanent bat habitats directly into the building, allowing ecological requirements to shape the form of the Gropius House visitor center addition.
